Is the 2-Day Acatenango Hike Worth It?

Who the cheapest 2-day Acatenango hike suits, who should pay more for a smaller group or a bilingual guide, and who should not go, read from the 350 newest reviews.

Updated November 2026

For a fit hiker who wants the night facing Fuego and the sunrise from the summit for the least money, yes: the cheapest 2-day hike gets you there, and most reviewers are happy. What the low price saves on shows in the low reviews: guides who hurry slower hikers and explain little, too little food, and crowded, cold beds. If any of those would spoil it for you, pay more for a smaller group or a bilingual guide.

What the 350 newest reviews say

Volcano Expeditions’ 2-Day Acatenango Volcano Hiking Adventure has 1,786 reviews on GetYourGuide at an average of 4.4 (checked November 2026). We read the 350 newest, posted between 8 May and 7 November 2026. Of those, 239 give five stars and 58 give four. 53 give three or fewer, and 35 of those 53 have any text.

Among the 35:

  • 19 complain about the guides: their pace with slower hikers, their manner, or how little they explained.
  • 16 complain about the food, mostly that there was too little of it.
  • 8 say the sleeping quarters were crowded or cold, three of them with five or six people to a shelter.
  • 7 describe long waits and a slow group pace on the way up.
  • 6 are about the evening Fuego trip: that it cost extra, or that the group saw little or nothing from it.
  • 2 say their group never went to the summit, one because of rain in the night.

Several of the low reviewers still call the volcano itself worth it. A three-star reviewer in July 2026 wrote that the hike is the same whichever company you choose, and wished they had paid a little more for comfort.

Who it suits

Map: Antigua Guatemala, the Acatenango park entrance near La Soledad, 21.7 km by road, and the summits of Acatenango (3,976 m) and Fuego (3,763 m) to the south
What the two days cover: Antigua, the drive to the park entrance near La Soledad, the climb towards Acatenango and the view across to Fuego.

The cheapest hike suits you if you are fit, can climb steeply for 4.5 to 6 hours, are happy with a guide who speaks Spanish, and will carry extra snacks and 3 litres of water. You get hotel pickup, a bed at base camp, three meals and a jacket, gloves and hat on loan for US$57 a person, with the Q100 (quetzales) park entrance on top.

Prices, ratings and review counts from the listings (GetYourGuide checked November 2026; Viator checked November 2026). Operators price by date and season, so treat the figures as the shape of the market, not a quote.

The dearer hikes have their own low reviews. Of the 350 newest reviews of Tours & Activities SA's tour (posted between 4 March and 5 November 2026), 49 give three stars or fewer; of the 19 reviews of the small group, 3 do, one of them because the English guide booked turned out to speak Spanish.

Who should not go

  • Anyone who cannot face hours of steep climbing at altitude: the hike is not for children under 11, pregnant women, people over 65, people with heart problems or people with a low level of fitness.
  • Anyone who needs a guaranteed view. Cloud, rain and Fuego’s own activity decide what you see, and no tour can promise it.

Before you book

CONRED restricted the ascent of Acatenango on 4 August 2026, during an eruption of Fuego; operators were selling dates in November 2026 when we checked. Check CONRED and INGUAT, Guatemala’s tourism institute, before you go. The 2-day hike price adds up the extras hike by hike.
