The Day Before and the Day After the Acatenango Hike
What to sort out in Antigua before the 2-day Acatenango hike (the meeting point, your passport, meals, your bags) and when each hike gets you back on day two.
The simplest way to handle the days around the hike is a hike that collects you and minds your bags. Volcano Expeditions’ 2-Day Acatenango Volcano Hiking Adventure picks you up at your hotel in Antigua, includes luggage storage and drops you back at your accommodation, from US$57 a person (checked November 2026). Most other hikes start at an office in Antigua, and some want details from you the day before.
The day before
- Where you start. Volcano Expeditions collects you at your hotel. Tours & Activities SA has you meet your guide in Antigua; it needs your passport number and a real mobile number for its WhatsApp groups, and gear rental and vegetarian meals are arranged the same way. Experience GT starts at a yellow house, number 11, opposite the Santa Clara restaurant, a block from Tanque La Unión; CA Travelers serves breakfast at its office from 7:15 AM.
- Food. Volcano Expeditions offers normal, vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free menus. Pack extra snacks whichever you book: 16 of the 35 low reviews with text among the 350 newest on Volcano Expeditions’ hike (8 May to 7 November 2026) complain about the food, mostly that there was too little.
- Cash and documents. Bring cash for the park entrance (Q100, in quetzales, for a foreign visitor; Municipality of Acatenango, checked November 2026) and for rentals. For Silverbacks Experiences' 4WD trip, bring your passport; a copy is accepted.
- Water. Buy it the day before: at least 3 litres a person on the cheapest hike.
Your bags while you are on the volcano
Volcano Expeditions includes luggage storage. On Marvelus Travel's hike bags can be stored in La Soledad for Q15 each, and Silverbacks Experiences keeps a storage area for your belongings at its camp. Take up only what you need: a backpack of about 45 litres is the size Volcano Expeditions has in mind, and your packed food goes in it too.

So keep the afternoon of day two free, and do not book an early bus or flight out that day. Three of the low reviews of Volcano Expeditions’ hike describe waits for transport: a pickup 35 minutes late, and 40 minutes and an hour of waiting for the bus after the descent.

CONRED restricted the ascent of Acatenango on 4 August 2026, during an eruption of Fuego; operators were selling dates in November 2026 when we checked. Check CONRED and INGUAT, Guatemala’s tourism institute, before you go. The 2-day itinerary has the hours in between.
