The 2-day hike from Antigua
Two Days, the Price and What Is Extra
How the two days run, what the cheapest hike covers, what you pay on top, and what the low reviews complain about.
The two days at a glance

Day one is the long one. Volcano Expeditions picks you up at your hotel in Antigua (the tour started at 8:00 AM on the dates we read) and stops at its station at 8:45 AM, where you are handed packed food, a jacket, gloves and a hat, and can rent a backpack or a flashlight. The bus then drives to La Soledad. The park entrance near the village is 21.7 km by road from Antigua.
After a briefing the group climbs to base camp, which takes 4.5 to 6 hours depending on its pace, with three bathroom stops on the way. You reach camp in the late afternoon, check in to your bed, eat dinner and watch Fuego across the way.
Day two starts in the dark for anyone who wants the summit at sunrise; those who would rather not can wait at camp. Breakfast is back at base camp, then the group walks down to where it started and the bus takes you to your accommodation in Antigua. The 2-day itinerary goes through it hour by hour and sets the other listings’ start times beside it.
What the price covers
The US$57 a person was the same on every date and party size we read, from 27 November 2026 to 10 March 2027 (checked November 2026). It buys:
- the ride from your hotel and back, and luggage storage;
- a bed in a dome at base camp, with a sleeping bag and a mat;
- lunch and dinner on day one, breakfast on day two and hot chocolate, with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free menus;
- a jacket (not waterproof), gloves and a cold hat on loan;
- the guide, who speaks Spanish.
What you pay on top
- The park entrance. The Municipality of Acatenango, which runs the park, charges a foreign visitor Q100 (quetzales) and a Guatemalan Q25; you get a wristband at the gate (Municipality of Acatenango, checked November 2026).
- Water. Bring at least 3 litres a person; about half a litre goes into the coffee or hot chocolate at camp.
- Rentals. Flashlights, backpacks, hiking shoes and hiking poles can be rented before the hike starts.
- The extra Fuego trip. Volcano Expeditions sells an “Extra tour to the Fuego Volcano” for Q200, not in the price; where it goes is not stated. CONRED, Guatemala’s disaster-reduction agency, said on 9 August 2026 that the ascent of Fuego is not authorized (Emisoras Unidas), and the municipality does not allow staying or camping in the areas called La Meseta and El Camellón.
The 2-day hike price sets this hike against every other one and adds up the extras.
Shared or a smaller group
Volcano Expeditions’ hike is a shared group of unstated size. Acatenango Experience VIP's small-group hike stops at 6 hikers to a guide and pays the park fees, from US$170 a person when two book together (checked November 2026). On the dates we read, one adult booking alone paid US$295 (checked November 2026). Tours & Activities SA's overnight tour, from US$90, has a guide in Spanish and English and an A-frame cabin with a mattress and pillow.
What reviewers mention
Volcano Expeditions’ hike has 1,786 reviews on GetYourGuide at an average of 4.4. We read the 350 newest, posted between 8 May and 7 November 2026: 239 give five stars and 53 give three or fewer. Of the 35 low ones with any text, 19 complain about the guides (their pace with slower hikers, their manner, or how little they explained), 16 about the food, mostly that there was too little, and 8 about the sleeping quarters, crowded or cold. Two say the group never went to the summit, one of them because of rain in the night. One French reviewer counts about 30 people in the group.
Is the 2-day hike worth it reads those reviews against what the dearer hikes add.
Before you book
- Access. CONRED restricted the ascent of Acatenango on 4 August 2026, during an eruption of Fuego; operators were selling dates in November 2026 when we checked. Check CONRED and INGUAT, Guatemala’s tourism institute, before you go.
- Fitness. The hike needs a good level of fitness and some hiking experience, and the trail can be steep. It is not for children under 11, pregnant women, people over 65 or people with heart problems.
- Toilets. Bring your own toilet paper for the three bathroom stops on day one.
- Cancelling. Every GetYourGuide hike here can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before, and you can reserve now and pay later.

On day two the optional summit climb starts before sunrise, then comes breakfast at camp, the walk down and the drive back to Antigua. See the 2-day itinerary.

Tours & Activities SA's tour is from US$90, the group of six from US$170 a person for two or more, and Silverbacks Experiences' 4WD trip from US$430. Add the park entrance and your water where the price leaves them out. See the 2-day hike price.
Not on the cheapest hikes. Volcano Expeditions' hike and Tours & Activities SA's tour leave it out; Acatenango Experience VIP's small group includes it. The Municipality of Acatenango charges a foreign visitor Q100 (quetzales) and a Guatemalan Q25, and gives you a wristband at the gate (acatenangovolcano.gt, checked November 2026).
At base camp below the summit, in whatever your operator has there. Volcano Expeditions gives you a dome with a sleeping bag and mat; Tours & Activities SA an A-frame cabin with a mattress and pillow; Acatenango Experience VIP a cabin with a mattress and sleeping bag. Eight of the 35 low reviews with text on Volcano Expeditions' hike (the 350 newest, May to November 2026) complain that the sleeping quarters were crowded or cold.
Yes, as an early climb on day two for anyone who wants it. On Volcano Expeditions' hike those who would rather not climb can wait at camp. Acatenango's summit is 3,976 m (CONAP, 2008). Two of the 35 low reviews with text say their group never went up, one of them because of rain in the night.
No. Volcano Expeditions' hike sells an extra tour to the Fuego volcano for Q200, with no destination given; Tours & Activities SA's leaves Fuego out of the price without a figure. CONRED said on 9 August 2026 that the ascent of Fuego is not authorized, and the Municipality of Acatenango does not allow staying or camping in the areas called La Meseta and El Camellón.
Yes, on the cheapest hike. Volcano Expeditions' hike includes luggage storage. See the day before and after for bags, pickups and the return on the other hikes.
Fit enough for hours of steep climbing. Volcano Expeditions' hike needs a good level of fitness and moderate hiking experience, and the trail can be steep; it is not for children under 11, pregnant women, people over 65 or people with heart problems. Acatenango Experience VIP's small group is for moderate-to-high fitness, with 6 or more hours of hiking on day one.
Check before you go. CONRED, Guatemala's disaster-reduction agency, restricted the ascent of Acatenango on 4 August 2026 during an eruption of Fuego; operators were selling dates in November 2026 when we checked. Check CONRED (conred.gob.gt) and INGUAT, the tourism institute, before you travel.
